4 Tips for Improving the Air Quality of Your Home

By Garland Heating and Air Conditioning

The importance of good air quality is indisputable, and especially in the home where we spend most of our time. And beyond that, when we have loved ones or visitors with allergies, asthma, or health conditions, it becomes downright imperative that good air quality exists to avoid any complications! So, here are some tips for improving the air quality of your home.

Tips for improving the air quality of your home
— from the experts at Garland

1.   Improve Ventilation

Having circulating air in your home is a pretty simple first step to take. Moving air helps avoid all types of issues that can come with stagnant air. Mold and mildew can build up due to moisture and humidity that is unable to leave an area due to poor circulation. On the same note, dander and other allergy triggering irritants can build up in specific areas of the house, and without proper air flow they may reach a point of suffering for those of us with sensitivity to such airborne contaminants. Further, having good circulation puts air through filters built into your HVAC system, which helps filter out potentially harmful contaminants, pollen, dander, and more.

2.   Replace Your Filters

Filters, as mentioned above, do a lot of work for the air quality of your house. They’re the gatekeepers for most of the air and keeping them in working condition is paramount to having good air quality in the home. It’s relatively simple to do on your own, typically the most complicated part of filter replacement is ensuring you have the proper filter for your equipment, and determining where on the HVAC system the filter is. The second part is usually obvious, and the first part is easy if you know what kind of system you have and can hop on the internet, which, if you’re reading this, we’ll assume you have access to. If it sounds a little more daunting a task than maybe you’re up for, technicians can do all sorts of routine service and can snap your filters out pretty quickly.

3.   Maintenance Service

Keeping your AC system maintained is a great idea for air quality. Verifying that your system can breathe properly will go a long way in making sure you can too. From cleaning out backed up water lines, to filters, or just simply making sure the HVAC system can efficiently cycle air throughout the home will do wonders for both your health and your budget. Routine maintenance keeps those emergency expenses away, after all.

4.   Air Purifier

While filters are great for the majority of what you’re trying to catch before it enters your lungs, they aren’t quite perfect. For what’s left you can layer on another level of purification. Filters can only reasonably be expected to filter things of a certain size, so it’s a perfect next line of defense for those smaller bacteria and mildew, along with purifiers that cater to specific problems like smoke, mold, or harmful gasses.
